Poem

Sing, O Bird

Sing to me, O bird—sing,And send the stirring melody to ring;
Today I vowed my loveTo the bright blossom's fragrance fair above;
Then send a melody of vision,Drawn from the murmuring anthem's soft precision;
And let the notes fall shadow-softAbove the rippling pool where breezes waft;
Give it, O bird—a breath,As though it were the blazing fire beneath;
For the heart's sigh is deep lament—Like sighing's own consuming fire unspent;
Thou art, O bird, my beloved,My echoing refuge and my shelter proved;
Thou art, O bird, my solace,My illuminating word in sorrow's palace;
Thou art, O bird, my advocate—Remain, O fairest advocate, my mate.
