This archive is maintained by the grandchildren of Gamila El Alaily (جميلة العلايلي), who steward her literary estate with the aim of preserving her legacy and making it accessible to readers, researchers, and future generations.
Texts, images, and metadata are published here in good faith from family collections, published editions, and scholarly sources. If you believe any material is inaccurate or requires a rights notice, we welcome your message.
Copyright & legal framework
Gamila El Alaily’s works remain protected by copyright law. As a general guide:
- Egypt: Under Law No. 82 of 2002 on the Protection of Intellectual Property Rights, copyright in literary and artistic works generally lasts for the life of the author plus 70 years after death. Gamila El Alaily died in 1991; her works therefore remain in copyright for the estate until at least 2061, subject to any applicable exceptions.
- International law: Egypt is a party to the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works (since 1977) and the WIPO Copyright Treaty. Rights recognised in Egypt are broadly consistent with international minimum standards for reproduction, distribution, translation, and public communication of works.
- Fair use / fair dealing: Limited quotation for criticism, review, or education may be permitted under applicable law, but this does not replace permission for full reproduction, commercial use, or new editions.
Reproduction, translation, anthologies, theatre, film, or any commercial use of Gamila El Alaily’s works requires prior written permission from the literary estate. Please use our contact form and select “Publication or reproduction permission”.
