"Try to understand me—would you find joy in my love and wealth?"She answers in a tone of gravity and truth:
"Suppose I held you dear, a chosen mate—""And fortune smiled and sealed a happy fate—"
"The hidden heart is never satisfied""By passion save for God on high."
"I long to see Him—that my eyes may find""His light in splendour, or remain blind."
"I spurned their riches of my own free will—""So grant me, Lord, Your bounty still."
"Idle lovers claim that I""Am a gazelle that stirs their amorous cry—"
"If what I claim is just and true,""I love none but God—and God alone will do."
