Poem

A Wish

O Maker of all beauty, grant to meIts every gift for one whose soul would flee.
Beauty and purity are signs that spillOn all these creatures with Thy heavenly will.
Love healed me with sublimity and drewA luminous form beyond the furthest blue.
How oft I bowed to seek my Lord's reliefFrom every sorrow, every weight of grief.
How oft I knelt and called Him from my heart,Praying His bounty might my soul impart.
O Lord, grant me a heart that finds in TheeIts exultation, faith, and clarity.
My heart from longing hath its sinews torn,It yearns for one believing, great, forlorn.
A spirit in whose grace I'd melt awayAs though I were no mortal soul that day.
It sheds its light upon the sickbed's gloom,And when it draws near, my grief finds room.
