Poem

Egypt

Egypt, mother of nations,Since ancient generations,
Egypt, cradle of resolve,And shield against ordeal's stroke,
We, O Egypt, are sacrifice,We are glory and pride's device,
We are firmness and bright flame,We are people of faithful name,
We live for struggle evermore,We are perfection's ancient store,
Sufficient for us this be told,Egypt our symbol, struggle bold,
Raise high, O Egypt, thy flag's fold,Fluttering between the skies of gold,
And accept from us our prayer,And accept from us our sacrifice fair,
We are light, then we are fire,And victory is our desire,
I swear I shall not return to mourning's seat,And repent as believer from my own defeat,
I'll guard my path and all that I defend,My homeland from the strangers' bitter end,
Would that my kin forgot my humiliation,That I might show them love and dedication,
Egyptian
Thy sin was not calamity, O sister dear,Thou art the victim in this world of mere,
Amniya
I'll tell despite my sorrow and my woe,The base men's malice and the cowards' show,
Palestinian
Alas for the beloved homeland's fame and might,How long I fear the simpletons' deceitful light,
Egyptian
Say not this thing,
Palestinian
I am bewildered,Alas, through innocence of simple folk,
Why has our fear dissolved — our triumph broke?Fear is not trait of honourable men,
Look at the shining sun, deriding whenClouds, rains, and storms assail its radiant face,
And tire of worldly feelings in their place,Singing like garden bird in joyful strain,
Chanting life's melodies and magic's reign,Like dawn within the seeing poet's eye,
Palestinian
Alas, my people's wound has pierced so deep,Its landmarks vanished — sorrow mine to keep,
Egyptian
For Zion's sake thou wouldst farewell the sphere,Yet thou art ornament of worlds bright and clear,
He who reveals all truths has favoured us,With wonders of the living, glorious,
Fill thou thy life with resolve and hope's desire,And sing tunes pointing to the martyr's fire,
Amniya
I must pay tribute for my humiliation,
Egyptian
My heart is thine in dedication,
Amniya
Wilt thou answer my invocation?
Egyptian
I gathered Arabs' hopes within our hearts combined,Struggle became the noble people's creed enshrined,
Thy call is every free believer's own,Light of hopes dispelling darkness overthrown,
Amniya
I fear the treachery that I have known,How oft I see my inmost parts o'erthrown,
I'll pour from mind the blood of talents fair,And melt from heart the fire of blood I bear,
Amniya
I'll keep inspiring strength in all thy days,Through life so long as hope within me stays,
Egyptian
And pour my warmth in thee, put thee to test,That we may live love's symbol, faith confessed.
