Morning came, revealing life and hope anew,And surging waves assailed the shores without ado;
Land's fair ones spread the naked wings of art,Yearning for sweet desires life's flowing part;
O sea, grant me thy clarity — I am the daisy's bloom,Fate bore me from paradise's heart to desert's gloom;
I gaze at waves that dance at morn and eventide,And charms that bring solace yet end in weary stride;
As though we were two brothers, childhood deniedParenthood — we weep life's tunes that in stone died;
O sea, what ails thee? Thou hast veiled thy face,Dost lure the unseen to laugh in pride's embrace?
How many souls thou guided from spreading ill,And raised the noble heart to life enlightened still;
They sought my shelter, cast off misery's chain,And found in my shade love — sweet longing's pain;
O sea, what majesty, devout, sublimely bowed,Art thou a standing cave? Or paradise sealed, proud?
A ship appeared upon thy waves, winds raging wild,And nymphs cast treasures on the breast of every child;
Men in ambition's world depart and homeward turn,They sold their conscience for debasement's scorn;
They grew as hungry as the wolf or beast of prey,And shared the victims' corpses, claws blood-red today.
