Approach, familiar to my faith and feeling,Reveal whate'er thou wilt of treasures sealed;
Grant me a peace whose clarity I need,O my inspirer—lighten thou my creed;
Grant me a safety holding life's best part,O sender of all blessings, generous heart;
Thou dawned'st upon me in the dream of night,A light expressing perfectness of right;
I crossed with thee the horizon, ascending high,O my delight in thee, O aid most nigh;
I conquered time's great wave, passed o'er the sea,Until I came on wings of victory;
I never thought thy love my treasure lay,From which my reason and my madness play;
When it took root within my breast, I hidIts surge—o'er secret depths it domineered;
I grew for thy command in love inclined,My very pride awaits thee, soul and mind;
I came to ask thee pathways through the mist,My heart their guide and faithful guideist;
Till I beheld thee in my paradise—Let me sing on beneath the branch's shade,
Like bird that carols hopes and love's parade,In garden mingling joy with sorrow's grade;
Thou led'st me on the paths of peace, whereinLie honour and the dignity of kin;
Thou who inspired my verses of desire,And gave my soul a wealth to lift me higher;
Thou openedst mine eyes to pathways wide,Where hope's companion scarce could there abide;
Gandhi's faith—a breath across the lands,Sent human fragrance to despairing hands;
Perchance creation shall perceive his creed,And see him fill the bosom and the need;
Perchance my life shall rest in garden fair,Beside the faithful—may he keep me there;
I who surrendered soul—if it be thy will,Decree love's death, or bid me flourish still;
Thou taught'st me what my deepest longing sought,Mystic love's light that lures me to be taught;
I crossed patience's horizon with thy call—What made the multitudes esteem thee all?
To thee, O father of India, eternity,For all thou gavest—example and degree;
Thy mention in the mind was fortune's breeze,A spirit embodied in guidance and ease;
My love, like faith, casts shadows on desire,A full moon ever in its bright entire.
